The Cambodian community is relatively new to the United States. Most Cambodian families immigrated in the 1980s and 1990s. Nonetheless, with over 4,400 Cambodians counted in Virginia, the 2000 US Census ranks Virginia 8th as the state with the largest Cambodian population. The Richmond-Petersburg area alone has at least 1,300 Cambodian-Americans. The total Cambodians in the United States in the 2000 US Census was recorded at 149,047.
