Founded in 1975, the Korean-American Society of Greater Richmond (KASGR) is a non-profit, non-partisan civic advocacy group representing the interests of the 8,000 Korean-Americans who live in the Richmond metropolitan area. The KASGR's mission statement is as follows:
  • Improve the welfare of Korean-Americans in the greater Richmond area and the surrounding region;
  • Educate its members on immigration procedures and United States citizenship requirements, and improve their English language skills;
  • Promote better communication between local government and the Korean community;
  • Educate its members about the culture of the United States and educate non-members about Korean culture;
  • Provide medical services to the elderly.

The history of the 8,000 Korean immigrants residing in the Greater Richmond area now is about 50 years old. There are 16 Korean churches plus one Korean School. In the Greater Richmond area, about 500 businesses, both small and large, are owned and run by Korean-Americans.

KASGR has been actively involved in connecting communities with various community projects and festivals in civic, education, and social servcies. We also provide cultural programs to local museums and schools as well as translation services to the community. Celebrating the centennial of Korean Immigration to the United States, KASGR invited forty-five professional dancers from the Kyonggi Provincial Dance Company of Korea. In order to introduce Korean culture to the Greater Richmond community, the performance was free of charge. This magnificent performance on March 19, 2003, at the Landmark Theater, was the talk of the town. It introduced authentic and traditional Korean culture to the Richmond community. KASGR have also held seminars, which were of benefit to the community.
